Volunteer trips to africa
More than a trip. A shared journey
For many years Kindling ran volunteer trips to South Africa - and for everyone who joined, they were truly life-changing.
These trips weren’t about “volunteering from a distance.” They were about genuine connection. Time spent with Maria. Time with the children. Sitting, listening, laughing, sharing meals, and understanding daily life in Windmill Park beyond what you could ever read or imagine.
Volunteers worked alongside the community on projects that were genuinely needed at the time - whether supporting a build, helping with veggie gardens, contributing skills, or simply being present where extra hands and hearts made a difference. The work was practical, meaningful, and always guided by the community itself.
Just as powerful were the relationships formed. Many people arrived as strangers and left as lifelong friends - connected by shared purpose, care, and unforgettable experiences.
After time in the community, trips would often continue with a safari - either in South Africa or another chosen African country - offering space to reflect, breathe and experience more of the continent’s extraordinary beauty. From wide open landscapes to incredible wildlife, it was a chance to see Africa in all its depth, contrast, and wonder.
These journeys stayed with people long after they returned home. They shifted perspectives, deepened empathy, and strengthened the connection between Kindling and the community we support.
Reflections from South Africa
““My trip to South Africa changed the way I see the world. The love, strength and resilience of the community will stay with me forever.””
““Spending time with Maria and her community in South Africa was one of the most humbling experiences of my life. The love she holds for the children, the way she leads with dignity and care, and the resilience of the community is something I will carry with me forever.””
“Our time in South Africa was so much more than a trip. We met people who now feel like family now, built something super meaningful together and experienced moments we will carry forever. Watching the sun rise on safari after seeing the Big Five, unforgettable. Helping build a classroom, it was magic in the most grounding and real way. Was like any other trip. ”
Volunteer trips will Return soon.
